Obtaining the Model
The Washington State/Idaho model is available at no charge to regional researchers upon approval from Washington State. In order to request the model, please send an email note to David Holland. The note should explain why you are requesting access to model and what you would like to do with the model. It should also identify the organization where you work and your position at your organization.
The model is a policy analysis model rather than a forecasting model. It is designed to estimate how production, consumption, prices, and trade in your region would have been different relative to the model's base year if parameters or exogenous variables representing productivity, consumer demand, trade, or taxation had been different. It is not designed to forecast commodity prices.
Once you obtain the model, please bear in mind that it is in a beta testing phase. Depending on the policy scenarios, parameter values and data that you use, the model may run properly or it may “crash.” In our experience the model has been very stable, but we have been careful to avoid sector aggregations that are empty. That is, where no industries or commodities exist in the regional data. There are ways around this problem by using the $operator in GAMS, but the easiest way to avoid the problem is through choice of sectors in the aggregation scheme.
If the model is used for commercial purposes, neither Washington State University nor any of the individuals involved in developing the model will be held liable for any losses incurred as a result of using the model. Your use of the model is at your own risk.
The CGE model is written in the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS) programming language. In order to run the model, you will need to have GAMS 2.50 or later installed on your computer. You will also need to have a license for the GAMS/PATH solver installed on your computer. GAMS and GAMS/PATH can be purchased from the GAMS Development Corporation.
We welcome comments and suggestions for improving the model. If you make any changes to the modeling framework, please let us know.
